Self Defense Classes in Colorado Springs

Self Defense Academy teaches practical, street-focused self defense in downtown Colorado Springs — not sport, not tournaments, just skills that work when it matters. We’re the only school in the city authorized to teach the Valente Brothers Method and the 27-lesson Fighting Foundations™ curriculum. Adults, women, and kids all train here, and your first class is free.

Programs & Classes

Your Local Jiu-Jitsu and Martial Arts Academy

We opened in downtown Colorado Springs in 2022 with one goal: teach real self defense to people who’ve never set foot on a mat. No belts to chase, no trophies on the wall. Just techniques built for an actual confrontation, taught by people who’ve trained the lineage themselves.

You’ll find us at 525 N Cascade Ave, downstairs at The Next Us co-working space. Parking’s close, and the entrance is easy to find once you know to head down.

Why Jiu-Jitsu Works for Real Self-Defense

Why Jiu-Jitsu Works for Real Self-Defense

Most confrontations end up close range or on the ground. That’s exactly where jiu-jitsu operates. Instead of relying on strength or speed, you learn distance management, positional control, and how to neutralize someone bigger than you. It’s why the system holds up for a 25-year-old and a 55-year-old in the same class.

The Valente Brothers Method We Teach

Our curriculum traces back to Helio Gracie through Dr. Pedro Valente Sr. and the Valente Brothers in Miami. It’s a structured system — striking defense, distance management, ground control — taught in a set order, not a random technique every night.

Flip Aguilera, our head instructor, trained directly at Valente Brothers headquarters and teaches it the way it was handed down.

Spirit, Body & Mind

Our mission is to raise your physical confidence and overall wellness by teaching a complete, efficient self-defense and wellness skill set — inside a safe, clean, positive, and respectful space.

We’re committed to preserving the technical and philosophical roots of jujutsu as passed down by Grandmasters Helio Gracie, Dr. Pedro Valente Sr., and the Valente Brothers.

What makes us different is a holistic jujutsu system built around the 753 Code: Spirit, Body, and Mind. It’s the belief that you are worth defending — and everything we teach comes back to that.

FAQs About Self Defense Classes in Colorado Springs

How much do self defense classes cost in Colorado Springs?2026-09-21T21:09:07+00:00

Pricing depends on the program and how many classes a week you train. We’ll walk you through exact numbers before you commit to anything — and your first class is free either way.

Do I need any experience to start?2026-09-21T21:09:39+00:00

No. You can walk in with zero martial arts background and start in Fighting Foundations. Every technique is taught step by step, and you’ll train alongside other beginners, not get thrown in with advanced students.

What’s the best age to start?2026-09-29T10:53:35+00:00

Kids can start as young as age 4 in our Youth Program. Adults regularly start in their 30s, 40s, and beyond — jiu-jitsu relies on position and timing, not speed or strength, so it works across a wide range of ages.

How many times a week should I train?2026-09-21T21:10:05+00:00

Two to three classes a week is enough for most people to build real skill without burning out. Consistency over months matters more than how often you train in any single week.

What makes Self Defense Academy different from other schools in Colorado Springs?2026-09-21T21:10:17+00:00

We teach jujutsu for street self defense in the Valente Brothers lineage — not sport competition. Every technique is chosen because it works against a real attacker, following a structured curriculum instead of a random lesson each night.
